The Issue

On April 20, 2026, the Weston Village Council voted 4–2 to rescind the Parks and Recreation governing document established on August 7, 2023 — a document with a proven track record of success. This action repeals the existing framework for our village's parks programming and oversight. That document provided a framework for willing volunteers to ensure the continued success of our community traditions and volunteer-led events.

The Ask

We, the undersigned residents of the Village of Weston, respectfully request that Village Council maintain or reinstate the previous Parks & Recreation document without changes.

Weston's Parks & Recreation events have been village-funded and volunteer-supported for decades, bringing residents together, strengthening community pride, and helping attract new families to our village.

Proposed changes to the document at the committee level risk causing significant delays — potentially several months — in planning and executing events. Additionally, uncertainty around revisions may impact whether volunteer-led events can continue in the same capacity, or at all.

While the Parks department receives approximately $10,000 across a dozen or so line items, many of these — such as insurance premiums, port-a-potties, and electrical service — fall under the management of Village Personnel, not the board. Park maintenance likewise remains under the control of the Village Administrator. The budget allocated for these activities represents only a very small fraction of overall Village spending, while providing meaningful benefits to the community.

We urge Village Council to reinstate the previous document and continue supporting the structure that residents and volunteers have relied on for years.
